Schools on the Island
Education
The Isle of Wight operates a two-tier school system with primary schools for ages 4 to 11 and secondary schools for ages 11 to 18. There are approximately 41 primary schools across the island, of which 19 are Church of England or Catholic aided or controlled. There are seven secondary schools, five of which have sixth forms.
The two main academy trusts operating on the island are Ormiston Academies Trust and Lift Schools (formerly FCAT). Several schools remain under local authority control. The Isle of Wight Council is responsible for school admissions, special educational needs and school transport.
Secondary schools include Christ the King College, Cowes Enterprise College, Medina College, Carisbrooke College, Sandown Bay Academy, Ryde Academy, and The Bay CE School. The Island Innovation VI Form Campus, based in Newport, provides a combined sixth form for Carisbrooke and Medina colleges.
Primary schools are distributed across the island, with most villages having their own school or sharing with a neighbouring village. Some smaller village schools have faced closure threats due to falling rolls. School transport is provided for children living more than the statutory walking distance from their nearest school.
Ofsted inspections of island schools show a broadly average picture. Some schools have achieved Good or Outstanding ratings, while others have required improvement. Recruitment of teaching staff can be challenging due to the ferry crossing making mainland commuting difficult.
