The Isle of Wight has a public library service managed by the council, with branches in the main towns and a mobile library serving rural communities. The largest library is in Newport, housed in a purpose-built building on Lord Louis Library on Orchard Street. Other branches include Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Cowes and Freshwater.
Libraries offer free book borrowing, internet access, printing and photocopying. Most branches host regular events including reading groups, children's story times, author visits and community activities. The Newport library has the most comprehensive reference collection. All branches are part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight library network, allowing inter-library loans.
The mobile library service visits villages and rural areas on a regular timetable, typically fortnightly. This is an important service for elderly residents and those without transport. Home library services are available for housebound residents.
Like library services across England, the island's libraries have faced budget pressures. Some branches have reduced their opening hours, and there has been periodic discussion about closures. Community groups have in some cases stepped in to support volunteer-run extensions to opening hours. Despite these challenges, the library service remains well used, particularly by families and older residents.
