Isle of Wight College
Education
Isle of Wight College is the island's major provider of further and higher education, serving over 4,000 learners each year. The main campus is on the outskirts of Newport, the county town, with good bus connections from across the island.
The college offers a broad range of courses including A-levels, BTECs, apprenticeships, foundation degrees and access courses. Vocational areas cover engineering, construction, health and social care, business, IT, creative arts, catering and hospitality. The college also provides adult education, courses for students with learning difficulties, and training for international students.
In 2017, the college opened the Centre of Excellence for Composites, Marine and Advanced Manufacturing (CECAMM), a specialist engineering facility costing 12 million pounds. This reflects the island's strengths in marine engineering, composites and advanced manufacturing, with companies like BAE Systems, GKN Aerospace and Vestas having operations on the island.
The college is part of the South Coast Institute of Technology, delivering industry-driven courses to address local skills gaps. Campus facilities include a learning resources centre, childcare provision, gym, dance studio and coffee shop.
For island residents, the college is a vital institution. Without it, young people would need to cross the Solent to access further education. The college works closely with local employers to ensure courses align with the island economy, which relies heavily on tourism, care, retail and marine industries.
