England's Island

Running and Parkrun

Sports

Running is popular on the Isle of Wight, supported by scenic routes, an active club scene and three parkrun events. The island's varied terrain offers everything from flat coastal paths to challenging downland climbs.

Parkrun events take place every Saturday morning at 9am, free to enter. Medina parkrun follows a route along the River Medina in Newport. Ryde parkrun takes place on the seafront. A third event has been established more recently. These weekly 5K runs attract a mix of serious runners and casual joggers, and are an important social fixture.

The Isle of Wight running clubs include Ryde Harriers, one of the oldest athletics clubs in the country, and the Isle of Wight Road Runners. Both organise training sessions, social runs and competitive events. The island hosts several organised races throughout the year, including the Isle of Wight Marathon and Half Marathon.

Trail running has grown in popularity, with the coastal path and downland trails offering challenging routes. The Round the Island ultra-marathon follows the coastal path for approximately 70 miles. Fell races and cross-country events take place in winter.

The Isle of Wight Walking Festival in May includes running events alongside the main walking programme. The island's compact size makes it possible to run between towns, and many runners use the coastal path for long training runs with regular bus stops for bail-out points if needed.
