Sports

Community sport thrives on the Isle of Wight, with football and cricket at its heart. The island has its own football league, the Isle of Wight Football League, which runs several divisions of Saturday and midweek fixtures. Clubs include Newport, Cowes Sports, East Cowes Vics, Ryde Saints, Shanklin, Ventnor, Brading Town and many more.

The island's senior clubs compete in mainland leagues as well as the island league. The standard is non-league, but matches are well supported by local communities. Several clubs have well-maintained grounds with clubhouses that serve as community facilities.

Cricket has a long tradition on the island. The Isle of Wight Cricket Board oversees a league structure with clubs across the island. Ventnor Cricket Club, perched high above the town with sea views, is one of the most photographed cricket grounds in England. Newclose County Cricket Ground near Newport hosts Hampshire County Cricket Club matches, bringing first-class cricket to the island several times each season.

Other team sports with active island leagues include hockey, rugby and netball. The island fields representative teams in various sports that compete against mainland sides. Youth sport is well organised, with school competitions and junior sections at most clubs. The annual Island Games, an international event for island communities, has seen Isle of Wight competitors represent the island.
