Appley Park stretches along the seafront at Ryde, east of the town centre, providing a long strip of green space between the road and the beach. The park is well maintained with lawns, flower beds, mature trees, and benches overlooking the Solent. The most distinctive feature is Appley Tower, a small castellated folly built in the nineteenth century that stands at the eastern end of the park and is a recognised local landmark. The beach below the park is sandy at low tide and popular with families in summer, with safe, shallow paddling in calm conditions. The views from the park across the Solent to Portsmouth, Gosport, and the mainland are excellent, with constant shipping traffic and yachts providing interest throughout the day. A cafe operates near the tower during the warmer months. The park forms part of the seafront promenade that runs from Ryde Pier westward through the town and eastward towards Puckpool Park and the village of Seaview. It is a pleasant, civilised piece of Victorian seafront planning and one of the better urban parks on the island. Dog walkers, joggers, and families all use it regularly, and the park is particularly attractive in the early evening light.
