England's Island

Romantic Breaks

Tourism

The Isle of Wight offers plenty for couples seeking a romantic break. The island's varied landscape, historic properties and independent dining scene create a setting quite different from the typical seaside resort.

Boutique accommodation is a strength. The island has characterful hotels, converted barns, luxury glamping pods and secluded cottages. Ventnor, with its steep streets and Mediterranean feel, has several boutique hotels. The Royal Hotel in Ventnor has a terrace overlooking the sea. Yarmouth has the George Hotel, a former governor's residence on the waterfront.

Scenic walks for two include the Tennyson Trail along the chalk downs to the Needles, the Undercliff path between Ventnor and Niton, and the quiet lanes of West Wight around Brighstone and Mottistone. Sunset viewpoints along the west coast, particularly at Compton Bay and the Needles, are memorable.

Dining options include intimate restaurants in Ventnor, waterfront dining in Yarmouth and Cowes, and country pubs in quiet villages. Several restaurants offer evening tasting menus. Local seafood is a highlight, with crab and lobster landed on the island.

Osborne House, Queen Victoria's private retreat, makes an atmospheric day out. The private beach and Swiss Cottage are particularly evocative. Farringford, Tennyson's former home at Freshwater, is now a hotel and offers a literary connection. Boat trips around the Needles or along the coast add a memorable experience.
