England's Island

Best Time to Visit

Tourism

The best time to visit the Isle of Wight depends on what you want from your trip. The peak season runs from June to September, when the weather is warmest, the sea is swimmable and all attractions are open. July and August are the busiest months, with higher accommodation prices and crowded beaches on sunny days.

May and June often offer the best combination of good weather and fewer visitors. The chalk downland is covered in wildflowers, and the days are long. This is also when the Isle of Wight Walking Festival takes place, one of the largest walking festivals in the UK.

September and early October can be excellent, with warm days, quieter beaches and lower accommodation prices. The sea is at its warmest after months of summer sunshine. Autumn colours in the island's woodlands are attractive from mid-October.

Winter brings a different character. Many seasonal attractions and some restaurants close or reduce hours between November and March. However, the walking is good in crisp winter weather, the landscape has a stark beauty, and accommodation is at its cheapest. Christmas events in Cowes and Newport add seasonal appeal.

Key events to consider when planning a visit: the Isle of Wight Festival in June brings 60,000 music fans; Cowes Week in early August transforms the north coast; the Garlic Festival in August is a popular food event. Booking accommodation early is essential during these events and school holidays.
