Ventnor Food Scene
Food & Drink
Ventnor has quietly established itself as the Isle of Wight's most interesting food destination, with a cluster of independent restaurants, cafes, and producers that would be impressive in a town three times its size. The combination of the town's bohemian character, its microclimate, its Botanic Garden, and its community of creative residents has produced a food scene that is distinctive, ambitious, and genuinely good.
The Smoking Lobster, set in the old Ventnor Royal Hotel on the Esplanade, is perhaps the island's most talked-about restaurant, offering Asian-influenced seafood in a stylish setting with sea views. The restaurant sources much of its seafood locally and has built a strong reputation for creative cooking that goes beyond the typical seaside restaurant menu. The Pond Cafe at neighbouring Bonchurch, tucked beneath the old church in a tranquil garden setting, is another destination restaurant that draws diners from across the island.
The Esplanade and High Street have a growing number of independent cafes and restaurants. Cantina has built a loyal following for its Mexican-influenced food. The Spyglass Inn on the seafront serves reliable pub food and local ales in an atmospheric maritime setting. Ventnor's coffee culture has improved significantly, with several independent cafes roasting their own beans or sourcing from specialist roasters.
The Ventnor Botanic Garden's cafe serves food that reflects the garden's Mediterranean and subtropical theme, and the terrace offers one of the most pleasant outdoor dining spots on the island. The garden also hosts supper clubs and food events that draw on the produce growing in the grounds.
Ventnor Exchange, a community arts venue in the old town, hosts regular food and drink events, pop-up restaurants, and supper clubs that bring experimental cooking and visiting chefs to the town. The Ventnor Fringe festival each summer adds to the food offering with temporary food stalls and themed events. The town's food scene is small enough to be intimate and walkable, but varied enough to reward several visits.
