England's Island

Supermarkets and Convenience

Shopping

The Isle of Wight has branches of most major UK supermarket chains. Newport, as the county town, has the widest choice: Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda, M&S, Iceland, Lidl and Co-op all have stores in or near the town centre. Ryde has a Tesco superstore and Co-op. East Cowes has a Waitrose. Freshwater has a Sainsbury's and Co-op. Lake has a Morrisons. Cowes has an Aldi, a small Sainsbury's and an M&S Simply Food.

Prices are generally the same as mainland branches of the same chains. The main difference is that there are no large out-of-town retail parks of the type found on the mainland, so choice within any single store may be slightly more limited.

Online grocery delivery is available from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Co-op, Waitrose and Asda, all delivering to island addresses. Delivery slots can be more limited than on the mainland, particularly at peak times. Some holiday accommodation providers recommend ordering a delivery to arrive on your check-in day.

Convenience stores and corner shops are found in most towns and larger villages. The Co-op and Nisa have the widest network of smaller stores. Some villages rely on a single shop for essentials. Community shops, run by volunteers, have opened in some villages where commercial shops have closed.
