Ryde and East Coast Dining
Food & Drink
Ryde and the eastern Isle of Wight offer the broadest choice of everyday dining on the island, with the resort towns of Ryde, Sandown, and Shanklin providing everything from traditional seaside fish and chips to independent restaurants with more ambitious menus. The east coast caters to a wider market than the specialist dining scenes of Cowes and Ventnor, and visitors will find familiar chains alongside local independents.
Ryde has the island's most diverse high street dining, reflecting its role as the main arrival point for foot passengers from the mainland. Union Street and the High Street have a mix of independent cafes, Italian restaurants, Indian and Chinese takeaways, fish and chip shops, and coffee shops. The Esplanade has cafes and ice cream parlours with views across the Solent. The town's restaurant scene has improved in recent years, with several independent operators raising the standard above the typical seaside town offering.
Sandown and Shanklin share a long sandy beach and a traditional seaside atmosphere. The dining here is focused on families and holiday visitors, with fish and chip shops, pizza restaurants, and pub food predominating. Shanklin Old Village, with its thatched cottages and narrow lanes, has several restaurants and tea rooms with more character than the seafront establishments. The Fisherman's Cottage in Shanklin is a reliable choice for pub food in a characterful setting.
Seaview, a quieter village between Ryde and Bembridge, has the Seaview Hotel, which has long been one of the island's best dining rooms, serving modern British food with a strong emphasis on local seafood. The hotel's bar and terrace are popular for informal meals and drinks. Bembridge has The Crab and Lobster, serving fresh seafood overlooking the harbour, and the Pilot Boat Inn for pub food.
The east coast's dining scene is less destination-focused than Cowes or Ventnor, but it offers reliable, affordable eating across a wider range of styles. The proximity of the main beaches and family attractions means that many visitors eat out here by convenience, and the overall standard has risen in response to growing expectations.
