Transport
Public transport on the Isle of Wight centres on the Southern Vectis bus network. The company, part of the Go-Ahead Group, has operated on the island since 1929 and runs 17 standard routes connecting all major towns and most villages. Services are generally reliable, though frequency drops in the evenings and on Sundays.
Key routes include the number 1 (Cowes to Newport, the most frequent), routes 2 and 3 linking Newport with Ryde and Sandown respectively, and route 7 serving the south coast. Open-top seasonal services run in summer, including the popular Island Coaster route along the south-west coast.
Ticket options include single fares, day returns, and multi-day Rover tickets. The 24-hour and 48-hour Rover tickets offer unlimited travel and can be bought from the driver, from travel shops in Ryde, Newport and Yarmouth, or via the clickit2ride app. Seven-day Freedom tickets suit longer stays. Group and family tickets are also available.
The Island Line railway operates between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin, with stations at Ryde Esplanade, Ryde St John's Road, Brading, Sandown and Lake. The trains are former London Underground Class 484 units. Services run roughly every 30 minutes. The line connects with ferry arrivals at Ryde Pier Head.
There is no scheduled coach service to or from the mainland. Community transport schemes operate in rural areas for residents with limited mobility.
