England's Island

Pharmacies and Dentists

Health

The Isle of Wight has pharmacies in all main towns, operated by both national chains and independent pharmacists. Boots and Lloyds Pharmacy have branches in Newport, Ryde, Sandown and other larger centres. Smaller towns and villages may not have a pharmacy, with residents relying on the nearest town or delivery services.

Pharmacies on the island offer the standard NHS services including prescription dispensing, over-the-counter advice, flu vaccinations and minor ailments consultations. Some offer additional services such as blood pressure checks and NHS Health Checks. Opening hours are typically Monday to Saturday, with limited Sunday and bank holiday cover. There is always at least one pharmacy open on the island for emergency dispensing.

Dental services have been a particular challenge on the Isle of Wight. Like many parts of England, access to NHS dentistry is limited, with most practices having closed their NHS lists to new patients. There are private dental practices in Newport, Ryde, Cowes and other towns. Residents who cannot find an NHS dentist can call the NHS helpline on 111 for assistance.

Visitors needing urgent dental treatment can contact NHS 111, which can arrange an emergency appointment. Private dentists may also accept urgent cases. The island has no dental hospital, so complex cases requiring specialist treatment are referred to mainland hospitals.
