Pet Services
Services
The Isle of Wight is well served by pet services, reflecting the island's dog-owning culture and popularity with pet-owning visitors. Veterinary practices are distributed across the main towns, with several offering emergency out-of-hours cover.
Veterinary surgeries include practices in Newport, Ryde, Sandown, Cowes and other locations. Most offer standard companion animal services including vaccinations, neutering, dental care, microchipping and emergency treatment. Referral to specialist mainland practices may be necessary for complex cases, involving a ferry crossing.
Dog grooming services are available across the island, from dedicated grooming parlours to mobile groomers who visit homes. Pet shops in the main towns stock food, accessories and supplies. Several farm shops and garden centres also carry pet supplies.
Kennels and catteries offer boarding for pets when owners are away. Several operate on the island, with availability tightest during summer holidays. Dog walking and pet sitting services are available from individual operators and through booking platforms.
The island's dog-friendly culture extends to many businesses. Pubs, cafes, holiday cottages and hotels that welcome dogs are widespread. Several beaches allow dogs year-round. Dog waste bins are provided at popular walking locations.
The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary at Wroxall cares for rescued donkeys and is open to visitors. The RSPCA has a presence on the island. Various animal rescue and rehoming charities operate locally, relying on volunteer support.
