Fish and Chips

Food & Drink

Fish and chips is a seaside institution on the Isle of Wight, and the island has no shortage of quality chippies. Every coastal town has at least one, and several have built strong reputations over decades. Eating chips on the beach or along the esplanade is a quintessential Isle of Wight holiday experience.

Among the best known are Chipmunks in Ryde, which won Bronze for Best Fish and Chips at the 2024 Red Funnel Isle of Wight Awards. Stotesbury's has been serving on the island for over 120 years, making it the oldest fish and chip bar on the Isle of Wight. The Codfather on Ryde seafront is renowned for its wide-ranging battered menu.

In Shanklin, Bayside Fish and Chips on the seafront offers views along the promenade, while the Happy Haddock in the old village cooks chips in beef dripping. Corries Cabin in Cowes has served the town for over 20 years and is considered among the best on the island. The Blue Crab in Yarmouth is popular with visitors arriving on the Lymington ferry.

Most chippies on the island use sustainably caught fish, with cod and haddock being the standard options alongside plaice and rock. Prices are generally in line with mainland seaside resorts. Queues can be substantial during summer evenings, particularly in Sandown and Shanklin. The Jolly Fryer is a notable mobile chippy that has served various island locations for over 30 years.
