Cowes Week is the oldest and largest annual sailing regatta in the world, held on the waters of the Solent off Cowes every year since 1826. The event runs for eight days and attracts around 8,000 competitors in approximately 1,000 boats, racing in classes ranging from small dinghies to ocean-going yachts. The racing is organised by the Cowes Combined Clubs, a consortium of the town's historic yacht clubs.

The regatta transforms Cowes from a quiet sailing town into a heaving festival of maritime sport and socialising. The waterfront fills with spectators watching the starts and finishes, and the town's pubs, restaurants and temporary bars operate at full capacity throughout the week. The Green, the grassy area on the waterfront, becomes the social hub with live music, food stalls and big-screen coverage of the racing.

The event has a long tradition of combining serious competitive sailing with an equally serious social programme. The yacht clubs host balls, dinners and parties, and there is a fireworks display on the final Friday that is one of the largest on the south coast. Non-sailors can enjoy the atmosphere, watch the racing from the shore or join spectator boat trips.

Cowes Week has faced challenges in recent years from rising costs and changing participation patterns, but it remains the centrepiece of the British sailing calendar and the single biggest event on the Isle of Wight. Accommodation in and around Cowes books out months in advance, and the Red Funnel ferries run extra services to cope with demand.
